Dead Heading advice

This question was asked by
Lynda W –

My neighbour never dead heads her lilies. They come back every year strong and fabulous.
I DO dead head but often my lilies seem to get weaker and disappear over a few years.
Do you have any idea why this should happen? We have the same soil. The only difference is her garden gets more sun.

Hi there,

We always advise on removing the flower heads but to leave plenty of stem and foliage to die back naturally to feed the lily bulbs for the following year.

Calla Lily bulbs

This question was asked by
Derek M –

Hi,
I have purchased a few calla Lilly bulbs from you. My question is when is the best time to plant in outside containers. When is early spring, end of March or end of April. For flowering in the summer
Thanks.

Hi Derek

Now (March) is the perfect time to plant Calla Lilies… any time between now and May. They need planting in pots and kept indoors in a sunny position until the risk of frost has passed. You can then transplant your callas to your garden or just move the pots to your patio or borders.

If you want to plant them straight outside, then I would wait until May when the weather has warmed up.

Your calla lilies will then flower later into the summer months and will need bringing back indoors before the first frosts hit.

Hi, are the double oriental lilies “Amistad” and “Double diamonds” gonna come back to stock? If so, do you know roughly when? Many thanks for your help!

Hello there,

I am not sure of the crop availability on those at the moment but we do have lots of Roselilies still in stock, these are equally as gorgeous. You can view those here:

Fragrant Lilies

This question was asked by
Robert W

Please what is your most fragrant Lilies?
I want to grow some by the side of my front door this year.

Thank you

Kind regards
Robert

Hi Robert

Any of the Oriental or Roselily varieties are all highly fragrant including the Oriental Trumpet Lilies (these are the taller varieties).

As a general rule of thumb, the whiter the lily the stronger the scent as they don’t have the colour to attract insects, they have the perfume instead. You can use our filtered search on the website and search by colour.

White oriental lilies have the strongest fragrance.

Hi there,

Do you have any roselily Ciara this year – or have a missed them?

Kind regards
Becky

Hi Becky

Unfortunately, we haven’t got Ciara Roselily this year but we do have a couple that are very similar, there’s Roselily ‘Viola’ (SKU177841)  or Roselily ‘Elena’ (SKU17618) that are equally gorgeous with deep pink petals with a lemony centre and speckles.

lily soil planting query

This question was asked by
Debs K

Hi,
I have just spent an afternoon planting my lily bulbs bought from you ( I am growing them for my sons wedding) .. ORDER 3042640 : LILY EMPRESS, ROSELILY AISHA and LILY AMISTAD — I am now panicking as used big pots filled with crocks in base, then mainly John Innes no 3 mixed with multi purpose and some John Innes no 2 , also vermiculite sprinkled through.
I did this after reading the lily leaflet enclosed. Now of course I am reading on the Harts website and realise I should have used ericaceous compost ?? Will my lily bulbs be ok or should I start again ..? This would be an expensive and big job. My pots are 22inch diameter . Thank you for your advice , debs

Hi Debs

What you have done sounds absolutely perfect. You can use either/or and will be fine.

I would also suggest feeding your lilies with a diluted tomato feed when you see signs of growth.
