Double Oriental Lillies

This question was asked by
Lynne Munro

Dear Hart Nursery
I would like to purchase 10 of your double lily bulbs – do I need to purchase 5 of 2 varieties to get the discounted price of £2 per bulb or can I get that price if I mix the varieties I order?
Many thanks
Lynne

Hi there,
I’m afraid it has to be the same variety. Have you seen our Roselily Bulb Collection? This is a great offer at 10 bulbs for £17.50!

Repotting Lilies and preventing Lily Beetle

This question was asked by
Nikki Lond-Caulk

I was wondering when the best time to repot my Lilies would be. They suffered rather badly from lily beetle this year. Should I wait until they have completely died back? The bulbs I bought from your stand at Gardeners World live have been wonderful.

Hi there,
Have you tried using Neem Oil on your lilies to prevent the Lily beetle from attacking them? If not, try mixing 5ml Neem Oil with 1litre of Water and a squirt of Washing Up Liquid. Spray once a week with a fresh mix.

Regarding repotting your lilies, I would leave them in until they have died back completely. It will probably be later Autumn by this time.

Neem oil to prevent lily beetles

This question was asked by
May Grandy

Do you mix Neem oil with anything to spray for Lily Beetle?

Hi May
That’s a very good question. We advise mixing 5ml Neem oil with 1litre of Water and squirt of Washing up Liquid to keep those red lily beetles away. The lilies need spraying with a fresh mix once a week.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes

Start of Autumn…

Autumn and what to plant

The temperature is dropping, days are getting shorter and the leaves are changing colour – all signs that summer is drawing to a close. But when does autumn actually start? Well it’s the 1st September if you go by the meteorological calendar or 23rd September based on the Astronimical calendar. If, like us, you’re wondering what the difference is, the meteorological calendar is more simplified and splits up the four seasons into three month blocks and the Astronomers base the date of the seasons upon autumnal equinox, when night and day are roughly equal length. So either way, Autumn is upon us! And its time to start thinking about your Spring garden as our glorious spring flowers like to be planted throughout the Autumn (Sept, Oct, Nov).

Here’s a little break down of what you can plant this Autumn to have some colour in your garden month by month:

January-February: CrocusSnowdrops,

February-March: Narcissus,  Leucojum Aestivum

March-April: Tulips,  Cyclamen,  Puschkinia, Anemone Blanda, Chinodoxa,
Erythronium Pagoda

April- May: FritillariaHyacinthoides Non-Scripta ‘Blue Bells’, Alliums

May +: CamassiaEremurus

Martagon Lilies

We now have our stunning Martagons available to order as well. With a few new varieties to choose from. Our Martagons will also be dispatched in the Autumn for planting throughout the months of Sept, Oct and Nov. Martagons are ideal for woodland type gardens. These special Lilies grow especially well in dappled shade in Humus-rich, Alkaline soil. They naturalize really well and are long lived and hardy.

Happy Gardening!

Lilies flowering in August

This question was asked by
Lisa

Hello,
I was wondering if you could let me know which lilies flower in August.
Thank you,
Lisa

Hi Lisa
Thank you for your email. We would say Orientals or Roselilies tend to flower the latest, usually the end of July/beginning of August.

Lilies/flowers for a wedding in September

This question was asked by
Amanda

Hello, I am looking for lilies to plant which will flower by 1st Sept 2018 for planters at a wedding. I do not know if any lilies in flower then & if so, which ones & when to order/plant Looking for white colour only. Thanks, Grateful if you can suggest anything.

Hi Amanda
I would advise ordering your lilies for delivery later into 2018. If we dispatch them to you say the end of May/beginning of June, they usually take 8-12 weeks to flower (depending on the variety – Asiatics are usually quicker to flower than say the orientals). I think Roselilies would be perfect for a wedding especially as they don’t have any pollen but still have the scent and flower a little later. Roselily Kathinka is a lovely white double lily with a fragrance. Alternatively, we have a gorgeous Double Oriental Lily called My Wedding – which would be perfect too. If you wish to order online, please just mention in the comments that they are for a wedding in September and change the delivery date to May.

Blue/Purple Lilies

This question was asked by
David

We are looking for blue and purple lily bulbs, do you have any?
David

Hi there,
I’m afraid we haven’t got any blue or purple lilies – If you have seen these as cut flower, I believe they have been colour died. We have plenty of pink/purple lilies but not purple. There nearest would be Hotline with a pinky-purple edge.

Hotline (harts1008)
