Planting tree lilies

This question was asked by
Margaret

I bought a large number of tree Lily bulbs from your stand at Malvern show. These had large shoots. I have read your instructions re planting and panted 3 times depth of bulb. My friend says I should plant with shoots showing out of soil. Could you clarify please I am confused.

Your bulbs will be absolutely fine planted how you’ve done it.

Sign of growth

This question was asked by
J. Gibson

My bulbs showed no growth at all in the last two years yet still looked healthy in the compost. I thought they must have rotted away but inspection proved not. I had two large pots, bought in flower, one I eventually split up and repotted and never saw another flower and the other pot just seemed to go dormant.

If your lily bulbs are nice and firm they should be fine. Perhaps give them another chance for next year by replacing with fresh compost and ensuring slugs aren’t eating them. Sometimes the bulbs will get too damp over winter which stops them flowering, but this doesn’t seem the case this time. Usually OT lilies last about six years, how long have you had your lilies?

A white, pollen-free Lily

This question was asked by
F. Mann

I want a white, pollen-free Lily that will do well in partial shade and which will be in flower throughout August. You have lots of ones on your website, so which would you recommend?

All our Roselily lilies are gorgeous and pollen free. They also carry a lovely fragrance too. Perhaps have a look at:

Roselily ‘Pamela’ (SKU17788)

Roselily ‘Leona’ (SKU17786)

However, please note, our lily bulbs are being dispatched In February 2019 now. You can still purchase our lilies from us up until July at all the flower shows we will be exhibiting at. See list here:

asiatic lilies

This question was asked by
barbara rushforth

I have a pot with 2 asiatic lillies in. They were magnificent last year but sadly 4 have died or been eating by slugs and only 2 are left. I need to buy 4 bulbs now to fill up the pot. Please advise.

You can order your lilies from us now but they will be dispatched in February next year as we are away from the nursery a lot now exhibiting at all the flower shows across the UK. However, we will still be selling our lily bulbs at the shows up until July this year. See the shows we will be exhibiting at here:

Lilies and cats

Are lilies dangerous to a cat’s health?

If cats digest the pollen from the lily, then yes they can be dangerous to them. If you have cats, we advise purchasing our pollen-free lily ranges, including the Roselily collections and double Oriental lilies.

Best conditions for Lilium Oriental Trumpet

This question was asked by
A. Bryson

I bought some Oriental Trumpet lilies from you at Chelsea last week and just wanted to check the best place for them. I know they grow quite tall and planned to put them at the back of a border which gets sun for most of the day. The soil is quite heavy there though, will that work or do I need more free draining please.

Lilies like up to 6-8 hours of full sun a day so the aspect you mention sounds great, but you’re right – you need to make sure the soil is well drained to prevent your lilies from rotting. Having a heavy / clay soil is likely to drown the lily bulbs in the winter. On very heavy soils, you’re best to plant lilies in pots using a good, multi-purpose compost, John Innes No. 3 for example.

Can I plant Asiatic Lilies now or is it too late?
