Do lilies need a feed?

This question was asked by
P. Armstrong

I have some lilies and feel that those lilies in pots must now be in desperate need of a feed after being there for a few years. As every feed under the sun has different components, could you tell me which in particular I should be looking for to feed my lilies? I would like to buy an organic feed if possible – any advice?

We use a good quality Tomato feed for our lilies once every other week. Also, after 3-4 years, your lilies will need dividing and replanting. Just lift the plants and divide the clumps, you will see baby bulblets attached to the original bulb, break these off and replant all the bulbs and bulblets. Add extra compost where necessary.

How many years will lilies flower for?

This question was asked by
Roger clark

We have a lily in our garden which we believe is Lily Amber Gold. This has flowered very successfully for several years but now the abundant flower heads have dwindled to only a very few. Is the plant tired and should be replaced or moved to another location? The foliage is still plentiful but unproductive. We have had red lily beetle which we removed immediately.

Lilies do flower year after year but after 3-4 years, they need dividing and replanting. Just lift the plants and divide the clumps, you will see baby bulblets attached to the original bulb break these off and replant all the bulbs and bulblets. Add extra compost where necessary.

Is it too late to plant pot lilies to flower in the summer?

No – you can still plant them if they have been held back for selling later in the year. They should flower in 12 weeks from planting, However, we have stopped our mail order of lilies for this year. You can order them from us now for delivery in Feb/March 2019.

Why won't might Ginger lily grow? Hedychium Gardnerianum

This question was asked by
P. Colman

My Hedychium Gardnerianum ‘ginger lily’ is showing one small green shoot which has now been there for a month and has not grown. What am I doing wrong?

Hedychium Gardnerianum is a later flowering plant, usually towards August – September and sometimes they can be more mature before they actually flower. Once established they will flower each year. They also like a well-drained soil and plenty of sun but need protecting over winter.

How to plant the Sword Lily – Acidanthra 'Gladiolus Callianthus'

This question was asked by
R. Camp

How deep do you plant Acidanthra ‘Gladiolus Callianthus bulbs and how far apart? Do you then water them? And any other info I may need.

Plant your Acidanthera Gladiolus Callianthus corms 10-16cm (4-6in) deep and 3-4 inches apart. Water your corms moderately and avoid letting them get too dry. If in pots, stop watering at the end of Summer and bring them indoors for winter to protect against frost.

When can I plant my lilies I have just purchased from you?

This question was asked by
G. Watling

Having attended the RHS Chatsworth Garden show, I purchased several of your tree Lily bulbs. Please could you advise on the best time to plant these and if they are not to be planted yet, then the best way to store them?

Please plant your lilies as soon as possible as they will still flower this year. Approx 12 weeks from planting.
