Which lilies are easy to grow?

This question was asked by
S. Henry

I once saw an expert on tv discussing lilies asiatic and oriental.
He said one of these was easy to grow, the other not so.
Trouble is, I can’t remember which he said was easy! Can you please help?
Thank you so much.

All lilies are fairly easy to grow as long as they are in well-drained soil. Different varieties of lilies do like different types of soil (Alkaline or Acidic). If you are unsure of your soil type in the garden, then growing them in pots will be perfect with a good multi-purpose soil and adequate drainage. But if you want to plant them in the garden borders, then go for Oriental Trumpet lilies are they are happy in any soil type.

So to answer your question, they are all easy to maintain and will come back year after year.

Strongest scented lilies

This question was asked by
R. Leverton

Which stargazer lilies have the best scent and nectar? I wish to attract Convolvulus Hawk-moths.

All our white oriental lilies are extremely highly scented as they attract insects through their fragrance and not colour.
We do have Lilium Oriental Stargazer or you could try a whiter variety. Or you could even try Nymph lilies as these have a slightly sweeter scent.

Lily ‘Crystal Blanca’ (SKU17899)

Lily ‘Extravaganza’ (harts1093)

When do you plant lily bulbs?

This question was asked by
H. Ferguson

When is the best time to plant lily bulbs?

Lily Bulbs should be planted as soon as possible. Ideally in the Spring but can be planted up until the Autumn. They will just flower a bit later and revert back to their usual flowering cycle the following year.

Planting lilies in pots

This question was asked by
Jane Millarini

Can lilies be planted in pots and what type of soil is required?

Yes lilies are great for pots. We suggest a nice gritty multi-purpose compost, add some gravel/grit to the bottom of the pot to allow for good drainage.

Moving Lilies

This question was asked by
David John Heycock

I have been growing lilies in pots for 3 years, can I now plant them out in the border please?

Yes this is no problem at all. It may be a little late now for this year as they may have started showing signs of growth. It’s probably best to leave it until the Autumn when everything has died back.
