Aftercare for lilies

This question was asked by
Jill merton

Am absolutely delighted with the lilies I bought from you in the early summer. They are now coming to the end of flowering. What is the best way to keep them healthy until next year? They are in pots and I do not have any glass. Do I cut them down and if so how far? I have deadheaded them. Thank you.

Hi Jill

When the Lily has finished flowering, cut any seed heads back and allow the foliage to die back naturally. Do not be tempted to cut the stem back until stems become hollow and brown. Ensure to leave at least 2′ of stem.
You do not need to lift your bulbs, they like a cold dormant phase throughout winter. Just ensure they do not get waterlogged as this will cause them to rot.

I am looking to buy some Liliums and I see in your online catalogue
has some bulbs down as sold out. Is this last years or has the crop failed. When do you intend to lift your bulbs or do await an order?

Hi William

We are currently updating our stock list when we know which crops will be available for February. They should all be online in the next couple of weeks so please check back then. You can pre-order your lilies now for February 2021 delivery.

How to care for Calla lilies

This question was asked by
M. Ainley

Hi
I bought some Calla lilies this year from you which are flowering beautifully. What I would like to know is:
Do I cut off the flowers off when they start dying down?
What do I about cutting the foliage and when should I lift the plant to put it in a pot to overwinter in my shed?
Thank you.

Hi Marilyn

Once the flowers have died, you can cut the flower heads off and leave the foliage to die back naturally. Usually by mid to late autumn when everything has turned yellow/brown you can remove the dead foliage and lift the rhizomes.

You can find all our Calla Lily Care Instructions at the bottom of page:

Can you please tell me the best time to plant these Dwarf Lily bulbs?

Good morning
All lilies bulbs need planting in the spring ideally so they flower in the summer.

Tall lilies

This question was asked by
Keith S

I had some from you a while ago and when flower is grown and buds formed they go brown and drop off do you know what could be done as I leave them in the ground I’ve had lots of lovely flowers for last couple of yrs but last Yr and this they are not good can you help me thanks.

Hi Keith

It could be a number of factors affecting your lilies, from the extreme weather conditions we have experienced, to the soil they are in. I would lift your bulbs after everything has died back. Divide them if they have any baby bulblets attached, replant them and give them some fresh compost. A slow release fertiliser will strengthen your lilies also.

I have a few issues with my lilies

This question was asked by
C. Davey

I treated myself to new lilies this year and I have a concern about my pollen free lily Bald Eagle. When the first few flowers burst open the flowers were more orange than red whereas the last flower was red. Also the plant seems to have died back way too quickly as the stem is brown and dean looking already. All my other Harts Lilies are still green leaves. I also have a 3 year old lily that appeared to be blind. It stopped growing at 2ft and looks a good healthy plant. I have noticed that a bulb have now appeared at the top of the stem. Any ideas

Hi Carolyn
Lilies can easily get stressed by extreme weather conditions. We’ve experienced some very hot weather along with plenty of rain, this can cause issues like Botrytis. The soil conditions can also affect the colour or the flowers and foliage. With regards to the blind lily, we recommend dividing your lily bulbs and replanting them after 3 years as the baby bulblets seem to sap all the energy from the bulb. I would suggest leaving it all to die back naturally and then break off the bulblets (usually around the end of autumn) replant them all and give a feed in the spring. Tomarite is a good feed for lilies.
