But they are now dying in the bud just as they are about to open. They are not short of water &amp; not in direct sun for more than a couple of hours- what have I done wrong? Is it the heat? I live on the top of the Pennines between Yorkshire &amp; Lancashire so it\u2019s not exactly tropical. The leaves are still green &amp; show no sign of wilt but the buds are just not thriving. But lilies don\u2019t like extremes either way.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"693\" data-end=\"770\">A sudden hot spell followed by cooler nights can shock developing buds.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"856\">If the buds form in cooler weather, then hit heat\/dry winds, they may shrivel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"903\"><strong data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"901\">Overwatering \/ Poor Drainage in Pots<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"1017\">Lilies hate sitting in soggy compost \u2014 roots and bulbs stay green-leafed but buds can rot from the inside.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1083\">Large pots need excellent drainage (lots of holes + grit).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1119\"><strong data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1117\">Fungal Disease (Botrytis)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1190\">Sometimes affects buds only, turning them brown before opening.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1273\">Leaves usually show spotting if botrytis is bad, so maybe less likely here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1302\"><strong data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1300\">Nutrient Imbalance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1414\">Lilies are heavy feeders.
