Introduce a tropical flair to your garden with Hedychium Gardnerianum, also known as the Kahili Ginger. The 'Ginger Lily', a plant native to the Himalayas India Nepal and Bhutan, features large, dramatic foliage and tall stems that highlight its leaves. When in bloom, it showcases spikes of up to fifty golden flowers with striking orange-red anthers and a delightful fragrance.
Although frost tender, the roots can withstand occasional light frosts. For container growth, move it to a sheltered location in cold weather to maintain its evergreen nature. If planted outdoors, ensure well-drained soil and cover the rhizomes with mulch to protect them through winter. The tubers will resprout in warmer weather as long as the soil does not freeze.
Hedychium gardnerianum rhizomes can be started off indoors in pots (a greenhouse or conservatory is ideal), they can then be planted out when risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, you can plant them straight outside directly into the ground from around late May.
Planting Hedychium Gardnerianum in pots
- Plant your rhizomes/tubers so that the rhizome is horizontal (on its side) with any visible shoots pointing upwards and is only half covered with soil.

- Add fresh potting compost and place the roots of the rhizome in the soil – if there are no roots visible the rhizome will soon begin to form them.

Care Instructions
Caring for your Hedychium Gardnerianum
- Once your 'Kahili Ginger' has finished flowering, cut the flower heads off.
- As soon as the frost touches the leaves they will lose their colour, and this is the time to cut them back. Use secateurs to cut the stems off leaving around 5cm of stem above ground level.
- Hedychium Gardnerianum are half hardy and can be ok kept outside during the winter months in the UK, however a generous topping of dry mulch to keep them insulated will protect them from long periods of frost.
- If preferred, bring your potted 'Ginger Lily' into a greenhouse during the winter months.
- Must be kept frost free.
- Once the risk of frosts have passed and you start to see signs of growth again, the mulch can be removed.
- Water regularly during active growth periods.
