How to Plant your Incarvillea
-
Incarvillea are hardy and can be planted directly outside in the spring.
-
If spring temperatures drop below -10C they can be potted up and grown on indoors. Plant the tubers into temporary pots in spring and grow-on in a sheltered position to transplant later when the risk of harsh frosts have passed. Alternatively, you can plant them directly into your borders providing the soil is not frozen.
Planting in Pots
- Plant your Incarvillea tuber upright with the thinner neck of the plant just beneath the surface. If they are already in leaf, the leaves should be exposed above the soil surface.
- Space the plants around 12-20cm apart.
- Plant in a good-quality multipurpose compost.
- Place in a sunny position.
- Water regularly. Allow the soil to become dry between watering.
Planting in Outside
- Find a position in full sun with free-draining soil.
- Plant your Incarvillea tuber upright with the thinner neck of the plant just beneath the surface. If they are already in leaf, the leaves should be exposed above the soil surface.
- Space the plants around 12-20cm apart.
- Water regularly. Allow the soil to become dry between watering.
How to care for your Incarvillea
- Remove the seed pods after flowering.
- Incarvillea may need lifting and stored in a cool, dry place throughout the winter months and replanted in the Spring (April to May).
