Narcissus Tazetta ‘Paperwhite’ is a tender, early-blooming variety beloved for its pure white flowers and irresistible sweet fragrance. Perfect for indoor gardening, these delightful blooms fill any room with their enchanting scent, making them a favourite during the festive season.

Don’t be fooled into thinking their charm ends there — ‘Paperwhites’ are surprisingly easy to grow. Planted indoors in autumn, they’ll swiftly burst into flower, bringing a touch of spring cheer to even the coldest winter days. Alternatively, they can be planted outdoors in garden borders or pots for an early spring display.

Each sturdy stem produces multiple flowers, making Narcissus Tazetta ‘Paperwhite’ a versatile and robust choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and fragrance, whether inside or out.

How to Plant Paperwhites (Narcissus Tazetta)

Where to Plant:

  • Indoors: Best for festive winter blooms. Ideal in pots, bowls, or vases.
  • Outdoors (in mild climates): Plant in borders or containers with free-draining soil in a sunny, sheltered spot. Not fully hardy in colder UK regions.

Indoor Planting (For Winter Blooms):

  • Plant late autumn (October–December) for flowers within 4–6 weeks — perfect for Christmas!
  • A shallow pot or decorative bowl (no drainage holes needed).
  • Bulb fibre, multi-purpose compost, or just decorative gravel/pebbles.
  • Place a layer of compost or pebbles in the bottom of your container.
  • Nestle bulbs close together (pointy end up), but not touching.
  • Cover just the bottom half of the bulbs with compost or pebbles.
  • Water lightly — just enough to moisten. Don’t soak!
  • If your Paperwhites get tall and leggy, add a stake for support or try growing in a tall glass vase for natural stability.

Outdoor Planting in Containers:

  • Plant late autumn, before the first hard frost.
  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil or use containers.
  • Plant bulbs 10cm (4") deep and about 7–10cm (3–4") apart.
  • Water in after planting, then keep soil just moist during growth.

Care Instructions

How to care for Paperwhites

  • Place in a cool, bright location (10–15°C) for 1–2 weeks to establish roots.
  • Then move to a warmer spot (18–20°C) with bright, indirect light to trigger flowering.
  • Turn the pot occasionally to keep growth straight.
  • Water sparingly as needed — the compost should stay just moist.

Aftercare for Paperwhites

  • Paperwhites are not frost-hardy, so if planting outdoors in the UK, consider lifting bulbs after flowering or protect with fleece.
  • In containers, move them into a sheltered spot or cold frame during hard frosts.
