I have received my delivery, thank you. How should these be planted below the surface or partly above, different info via Internet. Also should they be lifted during winter?

Hi, A very basic question from a beginner- exactly what does lifting and storing for winter mean? I don't have a shed or greenhouse, but do have a cool and dry loft, would that be suitable, and do they need to be stored in anything, eg.e soil etc? thank you Cate

No that is a good question and one that I'm sure other gardeners would be interested to know. If you have planted your Hymenocallis Festalis in the garden, once it has flowered, cut the flower head off and allow the stem and foliage to die back naturally, remove dead foliage and lift the bulb from the ground. Brushing off any soil. Place the cleaned bulb into a paper bag for example and store in a cool, dry place like a garage, greenhouse or shed. Your Loft will be sufficient too. Once any risk of frost has passed, you can re plant your Hymenocallis Festalis.
If you have planted your bulbs in pots, simply bring the pots under cover during the cold and wet months.

Hi, I'm relatively new to growing plant bulbs so could you please advise how to get the bulbs off to the best start. I have already planted them in plastic pots with a mixture of bulb compost and grit. Should I water them as well? And what is the ideally heat? Currently I have them in my summer house but this gets quite cold in the evening. Thanks for any advice you can give me! Paul

Hi there,
Your potted up Hymenocallis Festalis bulbs are fine to go outside now. If we have a frost now, it shouldn't be harsh enough to affect the Hymenocallis. Be sure to water your bulbs regularly.

Dear Sir/Madam, I bought quite a few Hymenocallis Festalis for this year. They look stunning. Ive had to move and replant a lot of my garden this last weekend, which has meant many have been dug up. Can you tell me am I best putting them back in the ground to die down naturally prior to cleaning them off for winter storage, or could I just let them dry off now in a shed and then move them in for the winter? Hi there,
If planting in the garden, you may need to lift and store your bulbs over the colder months to protect from frost. Lift your bulbs (once the stem and foliage has died back naturally) and store in a cool, dry place like a greenhouse or garage. Place bulbs in a paper bag cardboard box for protection. The bulbs should be cleaned of any soil (you can brush off any excess soil).
If planting in pots, simply bring under cover until the risk of frost has passed.

Which way up do you plant them or do they lie on there side???

You'll notice the bulbs of the Hymenocallis have green shoots/tips, these needs to be pointed upwards.

Now that the flowers are drying off, seed heads are forming. Will it weaken the plants if I let the seeds mature for gathering? Or should I cut them off to allow the bulbs to recover? Thanks
