Planting out my lilies

This question was asked by
- L. Hunt

Trust you are all safe and well. Due to the very wet autumn and winter, our new garden is still not ready for planting. I have started both my Lilies and Dahlias in pots. Will I be able to transplant into my new garden in May or will I have to grow them on in pots for this season? Kind Regards Lesley

Good morning,
Yes we are all well thank you. Hope you are too. If you have already planted your dahlias and lilies in pots, then I would advise keeping them in pots for the rest of their flowering season. You can then move them and replant them in your garden once everything has died back ,This is usually the end of Autumn.

Lilies and little side shoots

This question was asked by
- Tricia Saxby

The main lily is about , 2 inches heigh , but I have several thin Side shoots , Should I cut these off or leave them ? Look forward to hearing from you .

I would leave these side shoots for now and when this year's lily has died back (usually at the end of the Autumn), I would lift your bulbs, break off the baby bulblets and replant them all.

Advice for planting Lillies

This question was asked by
- Cathy Taylor

Hello I have ordered some Lillies from you and intend to plant them in containers so I can move them if and when I need to.... Can you kindly offer some advice about depth of planting, distance of planting in one container and ideal sites for Lillies? Thank you Cathy

Hi Cathy
You can find all planting instructions on our website. There's a section at the bottom of each lily variety that will tell you which soil is best etc.

As a general rule of thumb when planting lilies in pots, we advise:
Planting 3 bulbs in a 14" 'patio type' pot using good-quality, multi-purpose compost. We recommend mixing equal parts John Innes No.3 and an Ericaceous compost.
Plant the bulbs pointy end up with 6" of soil above them.

Hope this helps.

Watering Lilies

This question was asked by
- Annie Whitbread

When i plant my lilies bulbs in pots, how often should i water them? Do I not water at all until I see growth?

You can water your lilies moderately before signs of growth. Keep the soil evenly moist, watering whenever the top few inches of soil feel a bit dry. You should start seeing signs of growth quite soon especially in this warm weather. I would advise watering your lilies once a week when in active growth, and more often during dry spells. Make sure your pots have plenty of drainage though as the lilies will rot if they get too wet.

Lily Bulbs over winter

This question was asked by
- L. Boughen

hi can lily bulbs be left in the ground or do they have to be lifted and replanted , live in scotland

Lilies like a cold dormant phase throughout winter so they can be left in the ground as long as they are in a free draining location.

Lilies for flowering this year

This question was asked by
- A. Wood

Is it too late to plant lily bulbs ?

No it's not too late for planting lilies and they will still flower this year for you. Usually within 12 weeks of planting. But it depends on the variety, some will flower sooner.

Tree Lily's

This question was asked by
- Jerry Kiersey

Hello, about five years ago I put five tree lily's in a large pot. They have done very well but now the pot has perhaps a dozen or more due to offshoots. When/how do I divide or should I at all? Regards, Jerry.

Hi Jerry

Sorry for the delay in replying - we have been so busy. It seems everyone is now gardening in these difficult times.

I would wait for your lilies to flower and die back this year, by late autumn I would then lift your bulbs, divide them and replant them .

Kind regards
Victoria

Replacing Lilies after a few years

This question was asked by
- H. Harris

Hi I have bought umpteen lily bulbs from you over the years some I grow in pots when they need ericaceous soil some in the ground. I have noticed I have less bulbs growing than I had and I am wondering do lilies have a life span and thus I need to buy more bulbs to get the types back that are now missing?

Hi there,

Yes Lilies can need replacing after a few years. You may notice you need to break off any baby bulblets and replant these also as these can sap the energy form the adult bulbs. It always good to give them some fresh compost each as well.
