How to care for Martagon lilies after they’ve flowered

This question was asked by
jane spree

My tiger lillies purchased from you last year ( and giving an awesome display) did not give a repeat performance this year – flowers ok but spindly stems and few leaves.
I’m now want to put them away for the winter and have followed instructions regarding cutting them down. What do I do next? lift them?new compost? feed? (when) storage? Any expert advice to restore them to their former glory would be invaluable
Thank you
jane spree

HI there,

Here are some Care Instructions for your Martagon Lilies:

How to care for Martagon Lilies

    • Lilies can tolerate very cold conditions but they do not like to get wet.

    • If planting in borders in the garden, the soil must be well drained and, preferably, humus rich.

    • If planting in pots, make sure lilies are kept moist but do not get waterlogged.

    • Lilies prefer to be planted in a location with at least half a days full sunshine, if its a bit too shady they will lean their stems towards the sun.

    • Lily bulbs do not like to be dried out so they must be kept in soil at all times.

    • Try to plant your lilies where they will dry out after rain to prevent Botrytis, a fungus that spots the leaves. If you do see brown spots on your leaves, spray with a fungicide recommended for roses.

    • If planting in pots, it may be an idea to tilt the pots on their side in the winter to prevent waterlog.

    • When the Lily has finished flowering, cut any seed heads back and allow the foliage to die back naturally. Do not be tempted to cut the stem back until stems becomes hollow and brown.

    • Lilies like a cold dormant phase and are happy to stay outside throughout the winter, just ensure they don’t get waterlogged as this will cause the to rot.

    • After a few years of flowering, you may find the Lilium Henryi produces less blooms, it may be time to lift your bulbs and divide them by breaking off the bulblets. All the bulbs will then need replanting.

    • To prevent Lily Beetles from damaging your lilies, we recommend using the Lily Beetle Prevention Spray or making up your own and using the Concentrate. This Spray (Grazers G4) will also stimulate growth of your lilies.

    • You can feed your lilies with a Tomato Feed to stimulate and strengthen your lilies when you start to see signs of growth. Make up your tomato feed with half the recommended dilution (written on the instructions on the bottle) and feed once every 3 weeks.

Looking for smaller lilies

This question was asked by
Robert H

Hi, could you please recommend short scented lilies for a west facing raised bed backed by a stone wall facing the sea (coast is 500m distant). It’s in a warm walled town garden with lots of sun. The bed is humus rich but only 80cm deep. Because it can get windy I thought best to go for shorter lilies which will go behind lower planting at the front. Scent is the priority. Thank you.

Hi there,

Have you looked at our Oriental Pot Lilies? Here are some Lily varieties I’d recommend for your walled bed that will provide a gorgeous scent and are shorter in height.
Lily ‘Garden Party’ (harts110612)
Lily ‘Salmon Party’ (harts10374)
Lily ‘Sunny Azores’ (SKU17898)
Lily ‘Sunny Bahamas’ (harts110511)
Lily ‘Sunny Keys’ (SKU1763912)
Lily ‘Sunny Martinique’ (SKU17896)

Years ago I bought from you gorgeous lily bulbs Pink Brilliant, but they perished in a flood. Is it possible you could get some of these bulbs for me?

Hi there,

We won’t have Pink Brilliant for next year but we will have Lilium Marlon which is very similar.

Double lily with stamen

This question was asked by
Alan B

I purchased the above lilies together with My Wedding last year and have just had my first bloom from Empress ( My Wedding still to flower).
I notice that whilst it appears true to picture & is a double it has pollen stamens.
Is this normal or have I received the wrong bulbs.

Hi Alan

Yes, this is completely normal for the stamen to still present themselves because of climate factors. This can occur when the lilies get stressed because of extreme heat, which is most likely from the weather we experienced back in June.

Lily selection for 2024

This question was asked by
Mary G –

Bought a few bulbs from you this year. The best tree lilies I’ve grown yet. Outstanding blooms. They are what I look forward to flowering in my garden every year. I have grown them for about 5 years now.
What is the best time to purchase bulbs for next year to guarantee the best selection?

Hi Mary
We have our lilies in stock now ready for pre-ordering for delivery in the Spring.

I would advise ordering them now so you don’t miss out on any varieties. If we happen to add any new lilies to our collection that you like, I can always add them to your order at a later date so you don’t incur any additional P&P fees.

Lilies and pets

This question was asked by
Jill –

Are lilies safe to have in a garden with a cat/dog?
Thank you,
Jill

Hi there,

Like most things in the garden, if ingested, then yes lilies and are poisonous to cats/dogs. More commonly, the problem with lilies is when a cat or dog brushes past the pollen and then licks it off their fur. That said, mosts cats/dogs are clever enough not to eat anything from the garden.

Having the Pollen-free lilies eliminates this risk as they don’t have any pollen.
