Calla Lilly, Hedychium, Amarines & Amaryllis

This question was asked by

I bought some Calla Lilly, Hedychium, Amerines & Amaryllis bulbs from you at Tatton. I have potted them up but am now wondering if that was correct or if I should have left them until Spring. Also, what type of soil is best – gritty, manure or just garden soil?
If they do start growing just now should I remove them from the pots to over winter?
Would be grateful for advice.

Thanks, Moira

Hi Moira

Yes you have done the right thing as they still want to flower this year. They have just been held back in a coldstore and will flower later in the year. They will then revert back to their usual flowering cycle next year.

We have planted instructions care advice for each variety on our website. Please click on the links below and they will help you with overwintering and soil.

Amazing calla corms

Hi,

This year I have purchased 133 different calla lily cultivars from lots of different online suppliers including some from you and I have to report the corms you supplied have been the best corms by far to the point that I had to contact you to let you know. Your corms are at least twice the size of anyone else and they are of about the same price or cheaper in some cases. Of course I cannot comment on flower colour quality because they are not growing yet so I hope the quality continues.

Kind regards

Mark

Hi Mark

That’s lovely to her – thank you so much for letting us know. we pride ourselves on supplying top size bulbs, corms and rhizomes where we can.

How do I look after a calla Lily during winter in a big pot? What months do they flower and can they stay in a pot.

Calla Lilies are ideal for planting in containers for houseplants or for seasonal outdoor bedding displays. They need planting the spring for flowers throughout the summer months. Usually around June, July and August and they are such a long lasting flower.
If planting in pots, use a loam-based compost like John Innes No. 2 but a good multi-purpose compost is also fine.
Lift Rhizomes before the first frosts and store them over winter before replanting them next Spring (after the risk of frost has passed).
Store Rhizomes in trays of compost in a cool, dark, frost-free location, e.g a garage, shed, warm greenhouse or conservatory.

I overwintered a Calla Lilly that was given to me in a pot. It is starting to sprout. Do I need to report it and what is the best medium to use

Hi there,
You can give it some fresh compost but you can keep it where it is if you like. John Innes No. 2 is a good compost to use.

Hi there
We are looking for a type of Calla Lily that we can plant, flower and leave in the ground, and then flower year on year.
Can you help?
Thank you

Yes we have plenty of Callas to choose from – they will need lifting and storing over winter though.
