Nerine Bulbs

This question was asked by
P. Meek

I want to plant some Nerine bulbs but my local garden centre tell me that the bulbs are unavailable until next spring.

Yes you need to plant Nerines in the Spring for Summer flowering. We can take orders now, but they won’t be dispatched until March.

I bought some lilies at the Chatsworth show ( Cali) and planted them in pots as you advised. They are so beautiful, everyone who sees them compliments on them. They are about 1.5 m tall and I took them indoors as the wind might damage them. I will definitely order some more for next year.Shame I can’t attach a picture of them.

Hedychium Gardnerianum The 'Ginger Lily'

This question was asked by

I have two large pots, how many bulbs will I need for a stunning show? do they multiply in time, do they need seperating after time?

Hi
We would suggest 1 per pot. Please remember these do need heat to get them active. They will get bigger over time and when they reach a mature size, you can separate them.

Lillies for autumn planting

This question was asked by
Richard Allibone

Hi
Please could you tell me what lillies you have available for delivery now so I can plant in September. I am looking to add to my cut flower bed on my allotment where I have a few lillies already. I would like mainly pink colours and good scent that would make great cut flowers, ideally several varieties that will flower at slightly different times. Many thanks, Richard

Hi there,
The only lily we have available for dispatch and planting now, is Lilium Candidum – the Madonna Lily. We also have out Martagon Lilies available for dispatch this Autumn. All our other lilies will be sent out in the Spring for Summer flowering.

Will my lillies come back each year?

This question was asked by
T. Hargreaves

Hi I bought some bulbs from you which I planted and are about to flower now. Will they flower again next year and if so how should I care for them to ensure this? Should I lift them ?
Regards

Yes – your lilies are perennial and will come back again next year (as long as you haven’t cut them for fresh flowers in the home as this will take them a few more years to become established again). When the Lily has finished flowering, cut any seed heads back and allow the foliage to die back naturally. Do not be tempted to cut the stem back until stems becomes hollow and brown. Lilies can tolerate very cold conditions but they do not like to get wet. So they can left where they are just ensure they don’t get waterlogged. If your lilies are planted in pots, it may be an idea to tilt the pots on their side in the winter to prevent waterlog. You can feed your lilies with a Tomato Feed to stimulate and strengthen your lilies when you start to see signs of growth. Make up your tomato feed with half the recommended dilution (written on the instructions on the bottle) and feed once every 3 weeks.
Hope this helps.
