Novice to growing lilies

This question was asked by
H. Devey

Hi Just discovered your web site, I am a Lilly fan but a complete novice gardener at 76 years old. I am about to take a weeks holiday but I will be ordering your Lilly collection when I return also the cure for the Lilly Beetle. Expect my order in Sept.
Regards, Harry

Thank you for your email Harry. All lily bulb orders are dispatched in the spring next year now. Lilies are so easy to grow, especially if you start with the Tree-like lilies as they are happy in any well-drained soil in a sunny position.

Neem Oil

This question was asked by
Carole Jones

I used Neem oil in the recommended way with great success throughout last year. Later on after flowering I decided I would trial drenching the pots in dilute neem oil to see what would happen this year. In spite of the 15 pots of lilies being in close proximity to Fritillaries and lilies growing in the garden, from which I’ve removed numerous Lily beetles, non of the pot grown lilies have had any on them. They are growing away perfectly healthily. I decided on the drench treatment as I know that problems with Vine weevil can be treated in a similar manner. Do you think that this was a beneficial thing to do or is the lack of infestation is just coincidental?

No that sounds like a great idea to me. Neem Oil is a deterrent, so anywhere you put it around the lilies must be beneficial.

I have just received my begonia corms and would like to thank you for your very efficient service and the size of the corms far better than I could buy in any garden centre near here

Ah that’s lovely to hear – thank you for emailing us.

Lily beetles

This question was asked by
A. Waldron

This year these have decimated all my lil!ies. They are planted in the ground and in pots at different parts of a large garden. I do go round looking for the beetles but must have missed a lot. Is there anything else that you can advice

We sell a Lily Beetle Prevention Spray you can try. We’ve used it in our garden with great results. Alternatively. try making a garlic solution to spray on. Unfortunately, the key is being vigilant and picking them off immediately. Once a customer of ours planted a garlic bulb alongside their lily bulbs and that worked very well for them.

Do you grow fritillaria in your garden also? Unfortunately, they land on these first in the Spring months.

When to divide lilies

This question was asked by
Hazel Hobday

I have some tree lilies which clearly need dividing. I was going to wait until the spring but should I do it now?
The plants have stopped flowering and they have really struggled with fungus on the leaves this year so they are quite brown and bedraggled already.

Wait until everything has died back completely. Ideally this will be in the Autumn, then you can divide your lily bulbs and replant them. Perhaps try feeding them with a tomato feed when you start seeing signs of growth next year.

Hello,
I have seen on your web page that you ship to Croatia. I would like to check that out once again. If that is so, I would like to order some bulbs to be delivered on September.
Kind regards,
