Transplanting Gypsophila plant

This question was asked by

I have grown some bare root gypsophlia in pots with the intention of planting in the garden. They are growing well and are about 6 inches high. Should I transplant them into the garden yet. I don’t want to do them any damage!

If your gypsophila (baby’s breath) plants are about 6 inches tall, growing well, and have a healthy root system established in their pots, then yes, it’s a great time to transplant them into the garden, especially now that we’re into May and the risk of frost is minimal in most areas of the UK.

Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth transition:

  • Harden them off first if they’ve been in a sheltered or indoor spot—gradually expose them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days.

  • Choose a sunny, well-drained spot in the garden—gypsophila hates soggy soil.

  • Plant carefully at the same depth they were growing in the pot, and firm the soil around the base.

  • Water in well, but avoid waterlogging.

They should establish quickly and reward you with those airy, delicate blooms later in the season.
