Dahlia advice

When buying Dahlias from you the alternatives are 1 tuber, 3 tubers etc.
how many do I need for each of 2 very large pots/planters?
For example “Bishop of Llandaff”

Dahlias do get quite big and if you pinch them out they spread out quite a bit too. I would advise planting 1 x dahlia tuber in a container that is at least 12” deep and 16” wide. The bigger the pot, the better. Each dahlia tuber needs 12” x 12” x 12” of space to grow well. Don’t plant too many dahlia tubers in one pot.

The tips of my leaves look as if they are dying, solution please?

Hi Barbara

Yes this is normal, Allium leaves will start to die back before the allium flowers. You can snip off the unsightly ends of the leaves if you would prefer, it won’t harm the allium’s performance.

Which way to plant calla lily?

Dead Heading advice

My neighbour never dead heads her lilies. They come back every year strong and fabulous.
I DO dead head but often my lilies seem to get weaker and disappear over a few years.
Do you have any idea why this should happen? We have the same soil. The only difference is her garden gets more sun.

Hi there,

We always advise on removing the flower heads but to leave plenty of stem and foliage to die back naturally to feed the lily bulbs for the following year.

Hi,
I have purchased a few calla Lilly bulbs from you. My question is when is the best time to plant in outside containers. When is early spring, end of March or end of April. For flowering in the summer

Hi Derek

Now (March) is the perfect time to plant Calla Lilies… any time between now and May. They need planting in pots and kept indoors in a sunny position until the risk of frost has passed. You can then transplant your callas to your garden or just move the pots to your patio or borders.

If you want to plant them straight outside, then I would wait until May when the weather has warmed up.

Your calla lilies will then flower later into the summer months and will need bringing back indoors before the first frosts hit.

Fragrant Lilies

Hi Robert

Any of the Oriental or Roselily varieties are all highly fragrant including the Oriental Trumpet Lilies (these are the taller varieties).

As a general rule of thumb, the whiter the lily the stronger the scent as they don’t have the colour to attract insects, they have the perfume instead. You can use our filtered search on the website and search by colour.

Unfortunately, we haven’t got Ciara Roselily this year but we do have a couple that are very similar, there’s Roselily ‘Viola’ (SKU177841)  or Roselily ‘Elena’ (SKU17618) that are equally gorgeous with deep pink petals with a lemony centre and speckles.
