Gloriousa The Flame Lily

I purchased 3 bulbs from RHS Chelsea and I would like to know if I can plant them in a patio pot/ container of what size and how tall will they grow?

Hello there,
Here are some guides for your Gloriosa Rhhizomes which can reach upto 3metres in height.

Gloriosa Lilies like a well-drained soil.
We advise starting off your gloriosa rhizomes in a pot indoors before transferring them outside during the summer months.
However, you can find a suitable location in your garden or, preferably, plant in pots with suitable drainage holes to prevent waterlog.
While gloriosa lilies will grow well in most moderately fertile soil, they will not survive in soggy soil or standing water.
When planting in pots, plant 3 Rhizomes to a 14-16 inch pot.
Use a multi-purpose compost or John Innes No. 3 for your Gloriosa.
Site your Gloriosa Lilies where they will receive full sun to light shade.
Plant the Rhizome 3-4″ deep and 6-8″ apart. The tip of the Rhizome can point out the top of the soil by an inch.
Take care NOT to touch the growing points on the bulbs; bumping and abraiding this area tends to reduce sprouting.
The root and shoot come from the same end and need to be planted downwards on a 45 degree angle in a triangle formation. They’ll figure out which way is up.
It’s often helpful to add a support for the vines to clamber up. Preferably a one stake per bulb.
After planting, water your Gloriosa lilies generously, soaking the soil to settle it around the bulbs.
Roots and sprouts will form in a few weeks and these plants flower at a young age. (If the soil in your area is still quite cool wait until it warms before planting.)

Gloriosa Lily

This question was asked by

Hi,
I bough some Gloriosa lilies from you at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show and they are doing very well in my greenhouse, flowering etc.
I was wondering if it would be feasible for me to plant the bulbs permanently in my (unheated) greenhouse? I have a jasmine growing very well in the greenhouse at the moment. We live in Hull on the east coast but temperatures don’t plunge in winter like they used to. I was thinking of covering the area where i would plant the bulbs with fleece/straw over winter to help keep the temperature up and any frost at bay.
Do you think this would work?
Many thanks,
Ian

They should be ok in your greenhouse. We just advise that you don’t let your Gloriosa Tubers get damp or they could rot. Please ensure your soil has completely dried out.

I wanted to buy a pack of Gloriosa bulbs. Having seen that you are going to be at the Malvern Spring Show I wondered if it was likely that you will have any for sale on your stand ?

Yes we will have Gloriosa, the Flame lily, for sale at the Malvern Flower Show.

Planting Flame lilies

I have purchased 2 x 3 flame lilies from your website. Do I plant all three in one pot or one per pot? How deep should I plant the tubular?
Thank you

We advise planting the Rhizomes 3-4″ deep and 6-8″ apart. So it will depend on the size of your pot. If you wish to plant all 3 bulbs in one pot, I would suggest using an 18″ pot. If you look on our website, we advise planting the rhizomes on a 45 degree angle. A diagram can be found to show which way up to plant on the angle. I do hope that helps.
Kind regards

Which way to plant a Gloriosa Bulb

This question was asked by

How can I tell which way to plant a Gloriosa bulb? I can’t tell which is the growth tip and tail end?

Great question and this is one that baffles a few people. Below I have attached a diagram to show which way to plant a Gloriosa Rhizome/Bulb. It’s also best to plant the Gloriosa Rhizomes on a 45 degree angle as well.
