Availability of lily stock

This question was asked by
J. Kasperuk

Hello,
just wanted to check if the varieties that are showing as ‘out of stock’ have already been sold out for 2019 or if the site hasnt yet been updated?
thank you

We have updated everything online now. Some items may be Out of Stock for now but they may become available if we get new crops in due course depending on the crop.

Hope that helps.

Miss Lucy

This question was asked by
K. Greenfield

I’ve been trying to find Miss Lucy bulbs off and on for a while now but am struggling to find any. You are out of stock…do you know when you will have more to sell??
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there,
Unfortunately, Miss Lucy has been discontinued as the crop kept failing. It was a shame as it’s such a lovely looking lily. Have you looked at Roselily Kendra. That is a similar looking lily with the soft pink edges like Miss Lucy. Kendra Lily has a glorious scent without the pollen too!

Do I need to cut of the lily seed head?

This question was asked by
S. Bantin

After these lillies have flowered should the seed heads be left on or should they be removed?
Thank you.

Yes, you can cut the lily seed head off but allow the stem and foliage to die back naturally. Once it has all turned brown, you can remove the stem and discard it. This puts the energy back in the bulb to allow it to flourish the following year.

Dispatching lilies in Autumn

This question was asked by
K. Guthrie

Hello – We have a large, mountainous and damp Lake District garden which lilies love eventually (!) but if we plant in the conventional spring season slugs tend to annihilate the new shoots. I have found that if I can plant in late summer / early autumn the plants make a much better start but I struggle to find any supplier who will dispatch the plant at this time of year. Can you help?

Hi there,
Unfortunately, it’s too late for our Lilies to be planted this time of year. However, we will be sending Martagon Lilies out next month. Is this something you may be interested in? Alternatively, you could try ordering lilies from us in May and keep them in cold storage for a short while before planting.

How to get rid of red Lily Beetle

This question was asked by
M. Ball

Earlier in the year i purchased your candy cane collection and could not be more pleased so have just ordered another 18 lily bulbs and wondered if there is any insecticide to deter and kill lily beetle and where to buy it from. would greatly appreciate your help with thanks Mick

Ah that’s lovely to hear. Thank you for your continued custom.

Yes we have had some good results from diluted Neem Oil to keep the pesky Lily Beetle at bay! We recommend using a hand sprayer with 1 teaspoon of Neem Oil (5ml) plus a small amount of washing up liquid (as a surfactant) with approx. 500ml water. So 1 part Neem Oil to 100 parts water (1:100).
You can purchase Neem Oil online from Amazon I believe.

Preventing Botrytis on Lilies

This question was asked by
A. Gastad

I have many Lilies . Some years ago I discovered botrytis on some of the Lilies, and No one can give me any good advice for what to do. Must I stop growing Lilies (they don`t look nice when attacked by this (fungus?). Hope you have a good advice for me .

Thank you for your email. If you’re certain it is botrytis (a fungus that spots the leaves) then it’s caused by damp. Are your lilies in the shade? If so, you should lift your lily bulbs and replant them in a sunny position and/or in pots. Try to plant your lilies where they will dry out after rain to prevent Botrytis. If you do see brown spots on your leaves, spray with a fungicide recommended for roses. If you have noticed any yellow circles and gnarled leaves, then this could be a virus and the lily bulbs will need destroying unfortunately.

Growing lily bulbs in a greenhouse

This question was asked by
T. Gibson

Can I grow lilies in a large, airy greenhouse. I have a soil bed and large tubs.

Yes growing your lily bulbs in your greenhouse will be absolutely fine. We get great results from growing our lilies under glass. We use all our lilies to exhibit at the RHS Flower shows including the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We just advise on checking which soil you will need for the lily bulb varieties you have. The tree-like lilies (oriental trumpets) are happy in any soil.
Thanks

Lily Beetle

This question was asked by
Tina Brighton

Is there any deterrent for the lily beetle or is it just a case of keeping vigilant and squashing the little red devils when you see them? Thank you

Hi Tina
Being vigilant is key to keeping the lily beetles from ruining your lilies! However, we also suggest the following:

1) Spray with Imidcloprid and sunflower oil (or Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer).
2) If you do not like using insecticides then spraying with diluted fairy liquid or crushed garlic in water have been suggested. Crush a whole corm of garlic in a small pan of boiling water. Allow to cool, strain and put in a small container in the fridge. When using, dilute three parts water to one part garlic solution. Spray often, every few days, especially when it has rained. There is a garlic product available in garden centres and stores, but this is a much cheaper alternative.
3) More recently, a customer has tried planting their lily bulbs alongside a garlic and this has been quite successful in keeping these creatures away.
4) Alternatively, we have been advising our customers to spray their lilies with NEEM oil to eradicate the lily beetle!
Hope one of these suggestions will help you to keep your lilies looking as lovely as they should.

Neem Oil

This question was asked by
carole jones

Have you any experience of using Neem oil diluted and sprayed on fortnightly as a preventive for lily beetle? I am led to believe it interferes with beetle feeding and reproduction. I have just ordered some for use initially with fritillaries and later with lilies but would be very interested in any observations you could make. Thanks

Yes we highly recommend Neem oil, it is a brilliant prevention for Lily Beetle. We have tried and tested it with fantastic results and, incidentally, we will be selling Neem Oil along with our lily and fritillairia bulbs at the shows this year!

Thanks for your question!
