Calla Lily planting and care advice

This question was asked by
Miranda

Hi

We purchased 2 lots of 3 rhizomes from you at Hampton Court Flower Show in early July with the intention of planting them in pots on our sunny patio. However, when I looked up when they should be planted, it clearly states they should be planted in the Spring, which has obviously long gone.

Please can you tell me whether I should go ahead and plant them now, or should I store them in a cool, dark place and plant them next Spring?

I intend to use John Innes No. 3 but should I mix this with something else?

I look forward to hearing.

Miranda

Yes plant them now and they will flower this year still – just a little a later as they’ve been held back in a Coldstore.

They will then revert back to their usual flowering cycle next year.

Plant in a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 2 or you can mix it with a good-quality multi-purpose compost if you would like. Either is fine. Ensure they have adequate drainage and placed in a very warm position to get them activated.

Calla lilies

This question was asked by
Peter F

Hi,

We bought some Lilies from you last spring and were delighted with them when they flowered later in the year. This year however the Calla lilies have all produced leaves but of all the bulbs in three different pots we only managed two single flowers ! We lifted the bulbs last winter and replanted them in John Innes No 2, they have been in leaf now for approx two months is there anything we can do to encourage them to flower this year ?

Thank you

Hi Peter

Did you cut the flowers back last year? If it doesn’t have enough stem and foliage to die back and feed the bulbs, then they may not flower as well the following year. I would give them a feed next year as you start to see signs of growth. Try using a high potash fertiliser like a liquid tomato feed.

Calla Lilly, Hedychium, Amarines & Amaryllis

This question was asked by

I bought some Calla Lilly, Hedychium, Amerines & Amaryllis bulbs from you at Tatton. I have potted them up but am now wondering if that was correct or if I should have left them until Spring. Also, what type of soil is best – gritty, manure or just garden soil?
If they do start growing just now should I remove them from the pots to over winter?
Would be grateful for advice.

Thanks, Moira

Hi Moira

Yes you have done the right thing as they still want to flower this year. They have just been held back in a coldstore and will flower later in the year. They will then revert back to their usual flowering cycle next year.

We have planted instructions care advice for each variety on our website. Please click on the links below and they will help you with overwintering and soil.
