Feed for lilies

This question was asked by
Miss sandra –

Hi.
What is the best liquid feed for lilies grown in a pot and how often do I feed them?
Thanks

Hi Sandra
You can feed your lilies with a diluted Tomato Feed to stimulate and strengthen your lilies when you start to see signs of growth. Make up your tomato feed with half the recommended dilution (written on the instructions on the bottle) and feed once every 3 weeks.

We also have the Lily Beetle Prevention Spray that strengthen and stimulate growth as well as prevent the Lily Beetles from damaging the foliage.

Lily Beetle Prevention Spray

Hi – I’ve been looking around the local garden centres for something to kill off the red beetles that are starting to appear on my lilies, but cant find anything. Some experts say just squash them, but the little blighters crawl into the stem where you cant get at them. Clearly my computer’s cookies has identified what I’m looking for and up pops your details and two products that you have. Am I correct in that they are both preventative and I may be too late or is one better for this stage and would prevent further infestation.
Many thanks Allan Watson

Hi Allan,
Yes we have the The Grazers Spray and the Concentrate for you to make up yourself. They are both a repellent and not an insecticide/pesticide. Therefore, it won’t kill the beetles. You will need to remove all visible beetles and their babies beforehand and then start spraying. You will find the babies in either a black mess under the leaves or as a row of little tiny red dots.

Once you have removed all sight of the beetles, then you can start spraying ensuring to spray under the leaves as well. The spray makes the foliage taste bitter so the lily beetles won’t like the taste. I would advise spraying your lilies once a week and spray again if it rains. Hope this helps.

You get more for your money buying the concentrate as it will last a lot longer.

Hi, I see this doesn’t actually kill the lily beetles but what about the eggs and grubs? Does it kill these? Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian

The Lily Beetle Concentrate Spray makes the lily foliage taste bitter and therefore deters the beetles and larvae from eating it.

You have to keep spraying the lilies for the spray to be effective especially after rainfall. Wipe off any grubs and dispose of them if you see them.

What compost or mix of composts do I use for the lilies?

This question was asked by

I have just ordered some Oriental lily bulbs from you to grow in large clay pots. What is the best compost to use? Do I need to add sand as some sites advise? How do I prevent the dreaded Lily Beetle?? I can start them in a cold greenhouse.

Hi there,
You can mix John Innes No.3 with a good quality Multi-purpose compost (50:50 mix). Adding horticultural grit for drainage is recommended.

We have a Grazers G4 spray or concentrate you can purchase for the lily beetle.

Is there a way to prevent lily beetles, I pick them off but they are devastating them?

Hi Pearl

Lily Beetles are such a pain aren’t they? To get rid of them, you could try making a garlic solution (crushed garlic and water) or purchasing our lily beetle prevention spray.
