Planting bulbs

This question was asked by

I purchased a large number of bulbs yesterday from your stall at Wisley.
My understanding is that it is best to wait to plant tulip bulbs when it is colder, late October to November. Do you agree?
If so, is it ok to store the bulbs in a dry garage in their sacks and brown paper bags?

Yes – you need to wait until the first frosts as they will kill any virus’s in the soil. You can store your tulips as they are in a cool, dark place like a garage etc. Ensure any rodents can’t get to them.

Tulips grown in pots

Having bought many bulbs from you over the years, for the first time last year I planted lots of them in pots.
I’d be grateful if you could tell me if they will flower again next spring if I just leave them?

Thank you
P.S. Our tree lilies are amazing by the way!!!!

Hi there,
Tulips are naturally perennials coming back year-after-year. However, in some circumstances when they do return they are smaller and don’t bloom as well in their second or third years.

Tulips will flower well for one year and then need lifting out of the soil and carefully stored if you want to use them again. Once everything has fully died back, you can lift them and store them in a dark, dry, airy place over summer, allowing the air to circulate around them. They can then be replanted in the Autumn.

How many tulip bulbs for a 5x5ft bed?

This question was asked by
Susan –

I have a raised bed 5ft by 5ft .l would like to plant tulips in the bed for the Spring. How many bulbs do I need to fill the space?

Hi Susan

It really depends on how packed you would like the bed. For a fuller display, I would recommend planting 100-150 tulip bulbs for this area.

Planting tulip bulbs

This question was asked by
Wanda

Good morning,
I received my tulip bulbs ordered earlier this year, thank you.
It seems that the recommended time for planting them is October/ November. I live in Kent and it’s still quite warm here (next week we’ll have a mini heatwave for 2 days…) What would you recommend? Is it ok to wait until October to plant them? If yes, can I store the bulbs in their original packaging? Or, is it ok to plant them now?
Kind regards, Wanda

Hi Wanda

We advise planting tulips after the first frosts to kill off any virus in the soil.
You can keep the tulips in their packaging in a cool dark place where they won’t get wet at all.
Hope this helps.

When is the best time to plant tulips?

We advise planting tulip bulbs in the Autumn, preferably in October/November, after the firsts frosts as this will wipe out any viral and fungal diseases that may be in the soil and which may infect the bulbs. Planting later in the year means there is less risk of disease and this is when the tulip bulbs start putting their roots down. More information on how to plant tulips can be found here:

I want to plant tulips in the garden and leave them in to come again the next year without digging them up. Do you have a list or can you recommend the best tulip bulbs that would naturalise in the garden.
Thank you
Tracey Hughes

Hi Tracey
Most tulips should come back each year. Some tulips can be susceptible to virus over the summer. Here are some great favourites of ours that won’t need lifting and storing over winter:

Tulip ‘China Town’ (Pack of 15 Bulbs) (harts1116)

Princess Irene

Tulip ‘Russian Princess’ (Pack of 15 Bulbs) (SKU17625)

Tulip ‘Van Eijk’ (Pack of 15 Bulbs) (SKU17630)

When is the best time to buy tulip bulbs? We bought some wonderful ones at Shrewsbury flower show last year. They were fabulous!
Do we need to visit the nursery when lock down for us is over! As I presume no Shrewsbury flower show.
Thank you

Yes you’re right, Shrewsbury is cancelled this year unfortunately. You can pre-order your tulips from us now and we will start dispatching them late August/early September. Ideally they need planting in the Autumn. We will have some more varieties on our website soon, so keep checking back for updates.
