lily bulbs in flower for September

This question was asked by
Barry S

Looking for any lily bulbs you sell that flower in September?

Thanks
Barry

Hi Barry

I would advise buying lilies later in the year. We stop selling them in May and usually they take 10-12 weeks to flower so if you were to keep them in the fridge and plant them in June, you will find you should have them in flower in Sept.

Alternatively, you could try planting Nerines (the Guernsey lily) as these flower later into the Autumn.

Pink or Purple Flowers for Summer

This question was asked by
A. Van Zeller

Hi, I am creating a narrow border for a holiday cottage. I wanted to repeat plant something with a pom pom flower – to give the border some structure and because I like them 🙂 I have been looking at both agapanthus and alliums, but I am not sure on a variety that would work best. With both agapanthus and alliums, I prefer the varieties that have thinner, more grass like leaves that stay neat, but I have found it difficult to find the height I wanted (60cm +). The border is north east facing and I’m in north Derbyshire, so I need something that is fully hardy. I would prefer something purple or pink. I wonder if you have any ideas please.

Hi Anne-Marie

It’s the wrong time of year to plant Alliums as these need planting in the Autumn for Spring flowering. With Alliums, the foliage dies back before the flower comes. Therefore based on your requirements, I would suggest Agapanthus. You could also look at Nerines as these will flower a little after the Agapanthus into the Autumn giving you more colour for longer.

Delivery of Nerines

This question was asked by
Nick

About to order a pack of 25 nerines but noticed delivery was not until February, these need to be in the ground this month ideally, am I mistaken?

Hi Nick

We dispatch Nerines in the spring when they need planting for late Summer/early Autumn flowering.

These are a great addition to your garden when most of your other summer flowers are starting to die off… then you have the burst of Nerines coming through to give you some extra colour in your garden as the autumn months draw in.

Potting up Nerines

This question was asked by
Carrie

I’d like to order some Nerine but would like the know how to pot them up.

PLANTING NERINES IN POTS
If you are planning to plant in pots, plant your bulbs using a mixture of 50% multipurpose compost and 50% loam-based compost such as John Innes No.2. As with planting in the garden, plant the bulbs with their necks above the soil surface.

SOME KEY CARING TIPS FOR NERINES
Nerines do not like to be disturbed so establish a decent position from the off and avoid moving them.
Protect in very cold areas with a mulch over winter.
Don’t worry if the flowering is not brilliant the first year, its just establishing itself. Be patient and you will see results in 12-18months.
Do not divide Nerine bulbs as they prefer to become quite congested and grow in clumps.

Alternatively, we have planting and care instructions on each nerine product page Nerines
You should find some helpful information on potting up Nerines here.

When do I divide nerines?

Good morning,
You do not need to divide Nerine bulbs as they prefer to become quite congested and grow in clumps. Also, Nerines do not like to be disturbed so establish a decent position from the off and avoid moving them.
Protect in very cold areas with a mulch over winter.
Hope this helps. Further instructions on planting and caring for Nerines can be found on each product page:
